Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate the hyposthesis of the relationship betweenb breast cancer and the fatty acids component of habitual diet by analysis the fatty acids composition of subcutanceous adipose tisse with Gas Liquid Chromatorgraphy.
The cases included 24 patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer who first treated at Seoul National University Hospital 1990. The cases consisted of 10 premenopausal and 14 postmenopausal patients. The controls included 25 women who admitted in
the
Department of OB & GY because of cervix dysplasia and uterine myoma. The cases were 15 premenopausal and 10 postmenopausal.
The level of saturated fatty acids was significantly higher than that of controls in pre and postemenopausal patients. And the level of monounsaturated fatty acids(palmitolelc acid+oleic acid) was sinificantly lower than that of controls in
premenopausal patients. In the postmenopausal group the level of total monounsaturated fatty acids was not sinificantly lower than that of controls, but the level of oleic acid was significantly lower than that of controls.
As a conclsion, these results suggest that incresed intake of saturated fat and reduced intake of monounsaturated fat may contribute to the devlopment of breast cancer in pre and post menopausal women.
